Cedar Broadcast & Communications, in collaboration with Integrasi Naluri Sdn Bhd, successfully developed a state-of-the-art LED display solution tailored specifically for the FINAS (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia) studio in Ampang Jaya, Malaysia. This innovative solution enhances the studio’s ICVFX (In-Camera Visual Effects), designed to revolutionize filmmaking by integrating real-time visual effects with live-action footage.
The LED display solution incorporates state-of-the-art products from INFiLED’s GX series, celebrated for their exceptional resolution, vivid colours, and remarkable brightness, which render them perfect for dynamic visual settings. Additionally, the display is augmented by sophisticated hardware and software from Disguise, a prominent name in visual production technology, and LED processors from Brompton Technology, renowned for their superior image-processing abilities. This combination significantly enhances the visual experience by ensuring the seamless integration of diverse devices throughout the production workflow.
Regarding FINAS Malaysia ICVFX Virtual Production
FINAS is the governing body of the Malaysian film industry, committed to advancing film production and technology. To promote filmmaking in Malaysia, FINAS provides support by acquiring filming equipment and establishing production facilities and studios, while promoting the Malaysian film sector.
The recent investment by FINAS in the ICVFX virtual production platform aims to enhance the convenience of filming for creators. ICVFX represents a cutting-edge approach where visual effects are integrated during filming, rather than relying solely on post-production. As a fundamental component of virtual production, ICVFX enables filmmakers to visualize and capture virtual elements as if they were physically present, thereby streamlining the production process to achieve results comparable to tangible assets.
Challenges in the Project’s Visual Layout
FINAS anticipates a visually appealing solution that effectively supports virtual production. Their two primary demands are as follows.
Firstly, FINAS seeks to utilize the ICVFX virtual production platform to develop captivating visual experiences, primarily through integrating multiple screens. The proposal includes installing 147.5 square meters of LED screens, featuring ceiling-mounted displays for ambience, curved background screens for depth, and two lateral screens to enhance the visual experience.
Secondly, there is a strong emphasis on the quality of the visuals produced by the screens. Investors have demanded vibrant screen colours to bring the content to life, ensuring the visuals are striking and memorable. In addition, smooth playback is a critical requirement, as any lag or stutter in the visual presentation could detract from the overall experience. Furthermore, all screen colours within the platform must maintain a consistent tone. This consistency is vital for creating a cohesive visual narrative and ensuring the performers remain fully immersed in the experience.
INFiLED Products for the National-level Studio Setup
Due to a comprehensive consideration of installation and visual effects, the GX series products were ultimately selected for use in the FINAS ICVFX sound stage.
The GX series cabinets are designed for easy installation, are lightweight, and feature sturdy frames made from die-cast magnesium and aluminium alloy. This construction allows for quick assembly and disassembly, greatly minimizing the effort needed to install large screens. The series additionally offers two cabinet sizes, measuring 500*1000mm and 500*500mm, and features an adjustment capability for concave or convex curves of ± 10°. This flexibility simplifies achieving the desired screen size, enhancing the efficiency of setting up curved background screens.
Also, GX series screens comply with FINAS standards regarding image quality. These displays provide a brightness level of 1000 nits and feature an ultra-wide viewing angle of 160°, enabling cameras to capture images with consistent color and highlights from multiple angles within the sound stage. Furthermore, the LED panels are engineered to be anti-glare and have a high refresh rate of 3840Hz, ensuring that cameras can effortlessly capture smoothly displayed dynamic scenes on the screens.
